What is the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) LEADER programme?

LEADER is a French acronym which translates as "Liaison among actors in rural economic development." It is a well established method of delivering Rural Development Programme (RDP) funding at the local level and is a source of European funding that will support the development of rural areas over the period to 2020.

The focus of the programme is to deliver jobs and growth in rural areas through:

  • Support for mico and small emnterprises and farm diversification
  • Support for increasing farm productivity
  • Suppport for rural tourism
  • Support for increasing forestry productivity
  • Provision of rural services
  • Support for cultural and heritage activity.

Our Proposal

We are currently working with partners, businesses and communities to develop a proposal for East Leicestershire including Melton Borough, Harborough District and parts of Blaby District.

Within Charnwood the parishes falling within the proposed LEADER programme area include:

  • Barkby
  • Barkby Thorpe
  • Burton on the Wolds
  • Beeby
  • Cotes
  • East Goscote
  • Hoton and Prestwold
  • Ratcliffe on the Wreake
  • Rearsby
  • Seagrave
  • South Croxton
  • Thrussington
  • Walton on the Wolds
  • Wymeswold

We hope to secure up to £2 million for teh whole programme area over the next 6 years. The deadline for our proposal is 5 September 2014 and if successful funding will be available from January 2015.

The project is being led by Leicestershire County Council which is hosting two open meetings to discuss the programme at:

  • Kibworth Grammar School, LE8 0EW between 6:30 - 8:45 pm on Tuesday 5 August 2014, and
  • Waltham on the Wolds Village Hall, LE14 4AG between 6:30 - 8:45 pm on Wednesday 6 August 2014
