Retail Sector

Charnwood's main shopping can be found in the market town of Loughborough, but there are also countless smaller shops and boutiques in the Borough's villages and small towns.

Healthy High Streets?

The ‘Healthy High Street’ guide is a practical aid published by BIS to help local businesses, councils and community organisations spot the early warning signs and prevent further degeneration. The guide was produced with the help of business organisations, high street traders and town centre managers and is based on their real life experiences. It includes tips such as:

  • How to check on whether an area is attractive to customers.
  • Seeing if there are good parking and public transport facilities.
  • Looking at the variety of shops on offer.

It then helps people to work together to draw up an action plan for what needs to change to rejuvenate the area and put that plan into action. Read the guide.

Loughborough

Loughborough Town Centre has its own Town Talk web site. This is aimed primarily at the retail businesses in the town and is run by Loughborough Town Centre Partnership. One of its key aims is to deliver the Loughborough Town Centre Masterplan. Crime Out Of Loughborough (COOL) is a partnership between the Police, Charnwood Borough Council and the business community.

Loughborough BID

Feasibility work is currently being carried out to assess whether there is demand to create a Business Improvement District (BID) in the town. A Business Improvement District is an arrangement whereby businesses get together, decide what improvements they want to make to their area, how they’re going to manage it and what it will cost them. This all goes into a business plan which is voted on by all those who would have to pay. It lasts for a maximum of 5 years with the bottom line being that it improves the trading environment and the public realm. Anyone interested should contact the BID Project Manager for Loughborough on 01509 634534.

Leicestershire Market Towns Surveys

Leicestershire County Council commissioned a series of user satisfaction surveys in the main market towns across the county, including Loughborough, Shepshed, Syston and Thurmaston. This survey was first made in 2006 and again in 2008. It is due to be repeated in 2010. Detailed reports on each should be available later in 2010.
